Melanie+Brendan // Durham Engagement

Okay, so Melanie and Brendan make us look really great because they’re laughing in an adorable manner in nearly every photo. And I’d like to take credit for their sweet expressions but we’re actually not that funny, it’s more that Melanie and Brendan are just like that when they’re around each other. We barely had to direct them. At one point, Brendan just started giving Melanie a piggyback ride, which I think is the first time we’ve ever had anyone do that without a prompt from us first. They’re the perfect couple and someday I’ll put them in charge of teaching an instructional class on “How to Have Fun and Like Each Other During an Engagement Session” but for now, you guys will just have to take notes from their session.

Also, I should mention the adorable pups right? Seamus is the Pit Bull mix and Shiloh is the Beagle and they are so precious! They were adopted by Melanie and Brendan from one of the shelters where Melanie has worked. Melanie is a dog trainer and doggy behavioralist which sounds like the cutest job ever, except that she’s always trying to help dogs get adopted, so it’s also kind of sad because they’re cute and don’t have a home. It’s also safe to say that since they only have 2 dogs but always works around dogs that need adopted, she has far more self control than I do because at this point I’d probably be a hoarder. Melanie is also a vegan who really loves cake and musical theatre. Brendan is an ER doctor who eats a lot of peanut butter and gets upset when the ant dies in “Honey I Shrunk the Kids.” Together, their perfect day involves sleeping in, hiking with the dogs, hanging out with friends and watching tv. Obviously, they would look cute while doing all of these things, as evidenced below.

It’s always the people who warn us repeatedly how awkward they’re going to be in front of the camera who are always the least awkward people in front of the camera. Elizabeth and Catherine are two pretty amazing people who are not at all awkward in front of the camera even though they insist that they are. They met playing rugby, and who now enjoy T-Rexes (is that the appropriate plural of T-Rex?) and narwhals and brewing their own beer. They listed off different types of beer they enjoy brewing and they all sounded complicated and involved, but also tasty (I don’t know what coffee oatmeal porter is but I like oatmeal). And considering that they’re going a hops plant in their garden, I think it’s safe to say that it’s serious past time. And you know what they say! Those who homebrew together stay together. If that’s not what they say, it really doesn’t matter, because Elizabeth and Catherine are getting married so now I’m making it a legit saying. This land that they’re on in this shoot has been in Elizabeth’s family since the 40s, and is full of gorgeous fields and also probably snakes but we didn’t see any of those (yay!). Elizabeth and Catherine are fantastic and hilarious people, and we’re super excited to have them as our wedding clients in December!

Meet Lee and Ed! Lee was a fantastical, wonderful bridesmaid at Caroline+Brian’s wedding last spring and we think that she’s the bee’s knees. Ed is her equally fun but red-headed counterpart who we also met at that wedding but didn’t really get to know all that well besides, “Hello!” Now they are engaged and asked us to do their photos in Durham, a city beloved by them both (and us!). Together they helped us navigate the landmine of poison ivy and spider webs in the woods, and then together we tackled some classic downtown Durham where they live and work (Ed is a landscape designer and Lee is a nurse). They both met back while they were living in Boone and worked at the same place (Lee was a server for a restaurant where Ed was a bouncer for the bar at night). They didn’t really talk to each other though, and weren’t very friendly. Lee handed Ed her ID one night to which he responded, “I know who you are.” Lee’s mom kept telling her that there was probably “someone right under your nose that you’ll spend the rest of your life with!” but Lee was adamant that there was not a single person she’d consider dating. At different times later they both moved to Raleigh. At some point they ended up hanging out. And now they’re on our blog being cuddly. Lee’s Mom, you were totally right.
